  1. Our attendance for youth group was pretty good seeing that it was a holiday.  I talked about relationships and how we all desire community.  I think the teens really got something out of it.  I got to share a lot about my friendships of the past and of the present.
  2. Started something new with the teens..  When they are out of school like today I tell them the first person to give me a call or text me after 9:30am will get a free lunch on me.  I am excited to see the response.
  3. I know now why I am getting fat!  I am married to an awesome cook and we eat with the teens all the time after church.  (Got to love the hang time though.)
  4. What would Paul say to the Church in my location????
  5. Sometimes Christians get on my nerves.  Especially the ones who are concerned about the color of the walls in the church more than there are people in this community that are dying and going to HELL!
  6. I am reading another Andy Stanley book on Community now.  It is good.  I love the way he writes.
  7. The wall in my office is really white!  It doesn’t inspire creativity.  Any ideas to make it a better environment for creativity?
  8. I wish that ever teen that is connected to my church would start showing up for youth group!  If the parents would start teaching them that it is important to be apart of a group and grow in Christ with others then they probably would start coming.  I have tried and tried to get them to come.  It is like pulling teeth.
  9. Really debating on getting Wii Fit.  I need to be doing something to get fit.  It has been hard to stay healthy when I don’t play baseball or basketball every day anymore.
  10. I love my job! I love the teens I work with every week!
  11. We are remodeling the youth room!  I can’t wait.  It is going to look like a warehouse for real.  I think it will be a good change in the environment.  The teens will feel a lot more comfortable to worship, hang out, and grow in Christ.
  12. Alex Campbell won the free lunch.  He just texted me “I want the lunch dude!”
That is it for my dumpage.

Communicating For A Change

I just finished the book “Communicating For A Change” by Andy Stanley and Lane Jones.

This is a must read for anyone who communicates.  It is geared for pastors and it really challenged me in how I present and prepare a message.  Andy Stanley is one of the best communicators I have ever heard.  Going through college, I was taught how we should prepare a sermon.  The most popular of them were the 3 points or more sermons.  I know most people are a lot like me and go away from a sermon with 3 points and only remember 1.  Andy shows pastors how to present a message around one main point and do it well.  I have been using this way for a month or so now and I have notices everyone is engaged and remember what I talked about after they leave.

This is a must read for every pastor (Senior pastor, lead pastor, church planter, youth pastor, children’s pastor, etc.)

You may be asking what in the world has Dustin been doing and why isn’t he blogging.  He is my answer: Super Busy.

Here is a list of things that I have been doing the past month

  1. Spoke and helped plan a District Youth Retreat on May 9-10.
  2. Speaking every week for youth group and planning things to do with them.
  3. Casting vision for the next year for the youth group.  (I think we are going to grow double this year!)
  4. Planning the rallies at camp this summer. (I think they are going to be great!  I have been praying really hard for God to show up at camp.  I know he will.  Please pray)
  5. Playing Mario Kart Wii at night a lot. (Yes, this does keep me busy.  It is a way for me to get away from everything.  Movies do the same thing.  Thanks!)
  6. Reading Communicating For A Change by Andy Stanley – Great book!  It is challenging me so much.)
  7. Dating my wife every thursday night! I love it!  We spend a lot of time together and I am falling more and more in love with her.
  8. Getting ready to be Foster parents.  We have had to do some work on the house to get it to be ready for a child to come into it.  (We are excited and are praying that this process will end soon.  We have one more visit to see if we have lead in our home.  I hope we don’t.  Please pray.  Also please pray that this lady who is coming to do this will hurry.  Thanks!)
  9. Meeting with leaders who are influencing me to be the best leader that I can be.
  10. Dreaming Big about what God is wants to do within the Church!

That is just a little update on what is going on in my life right now.

A Pharisee’s Blog – In My Opinion
May 6, 2008, 9:45 am

I read a book called God’s Blogs last year and it was based on if God were to blog what would it be like.  It was a really good read.  It got me thinking about what would a modern day Pharisee’s blog would look like.

Here is how I think it would read…

Well it is sunday and I went to the same ole church and sat in the same ole pew.  I love MY church.  It was great seeing all my family and people just like me at MY church today.  I still can’t believe that guy with those ear rings came in a sat behind me today.  I wanted to get up and just kick him out but instead I just told me Mom that he needed to leave.  The pastor really preached it today.  I can’t remember what he really preached on but I know he was into it and it was out of the Old Testament so it had to be good.

After church we went to our favorite place to eat.  The food was great as always.  I left the waitress a dollar for my 20 dollar meal and I feel good about it.  I think she will be bless by that because it looked to me that she was still a teenage and looked to be pregnant.

I got home today at about 2 o clock and started surfing through the blog world and found out that the Rock and Roll church down the street lead 100 people to Christ today.  I don’t believe that is true.  They are preaching falsely.  I even hear the preacher wore sandals to church today and drove in on a motorcycle.  All I have to say is I am not going to give them my W2 like the rest of their church has to do to become a member.

I decided to go to the Rock and Roll church service tonight to see what they do.

6 p.m. Showed up to the church – dress to impress I must say.  Suit and tie!  The band started out with a song that seemed to be a song of secular radio.  I was really mad over that one.  I did not know any of the worship songs that they were doing. The drums were loud and the guitars sounded like I was at a Rock concert.  This is just plain evil.  This church and these people are not being godly.

The pastor got up and started talking about Jesus like he hangs out with him daily.  I don’t like the way he sounds like a person off the street.  That isn’t the type of language my bible sounds like.  KJV only I must say.  I couldn’t stay for the whole sermon because I was so mad at what he was saying about how everyone there needs to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  He didn’t even talk about the Old Testament and the way the Law puts it.  I am glad I don’t go to this church and everyone you should not either.

10 pm.  I finally got in the bed with my wife so that we could talk for about 10 mins.  We didn’t get to talk much today so I told her all about the church and how bad it was and then told her I needed to write on my blog and give a daily update.

11 pm.  Now I am going to sleep good night.

Ok so this is my opinion of what a modern day pharisee would write.  I read many blogs out there that just bash other churches and pastors.  It gets on my nerves.  All I have to say to you pharisees out there is STOP IT and GET A LIFE!  If the church would come together and start being the church that Christ wanted it to be then we could reach out and the church in America would start to grow.  I know some churches are growing but it is people like this modern day pharisee that is causing the whole church problems.

Tuesday Night Set List

  1. Awesome is the Lord – Chris Tomlin
  2. Salvation is Here – Hillsong United
  3. Your Blood (Nothing but the Blood) – Matt Redman
  4. Center – Charlie Hall
Tuesday night was one of the hardest nights for worship.  We didn’t see to connect with the people as much and in turn did not connect to God as much as I would have liked.  We did worship but I felt like people were distant from it though.  I think one of the problems though was because of song selection.  A lot of the people that were there all of the songs were new to them (I know they do need to turn on Christian radio a little more.)
Wednesday Night Set List
  1. Mighty to Save/Shout unto God – Hillsong United
  2. Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone) – Chris Tomlin
  3. I see the Lord – good question but I am going to go with Isaiah 6 on that one.
We had several things in the intro where the band played along with them but it wasn’t really what we had originally planned.  It was good but a little long so we had to shorten our worship set up a little. I thought it went really well.  Everyone knew the songs and everyone was singing out.  I thought Shout unto God may have caught people of guard. Oh well, I like to shout out to God!  Then the last two song went great.  I really enjoyed singing I See the Lord.  There is something about singing scripture.  I even had to take off my sandals because I didn’t want any pride to get in the way 🙂  I loved the message.  It really challenged me.
God moved in some amazing ways this week.  He used Charles Moses greatly.  I love listening to that man because he is so funny and he straight up brings it!  He isn’t scared to uses words that communicate better to this day and age.  He isn’t scared to tell you like it is.  He isn’t scared to get in your face.  He just speaks what God gives him.  Good stuff Good times!  I hope though this revival (which these days is just a name for a gathering of churches in the south) leads to a great REVIVAL (God coming down) in this community.  I hope people in these churches that were here go out and be the church in a world that is in need of Christ!
